Navigating NJPAP: A Guide for Healthcare Professionals

A substance-use disorder, mental-health condition, or other impairment can raise serious concerns for licensed healthcare professionals, particularly when it affects their ability to practice or maintain their professional license. The New Jersey Professional Assistance Program (NJPAP or PAPNJ) offers eligible healthcare professionals an opportunity to address these concerns through evaluation, treatment referrals, monitoring, and support, potentially avoiding license suspension or revocation or helping them pursue license reinstatement.

Who Is Eligible for NJPAP?

NJPAP serves a broad range of healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, and other licensed practitioners. Depending on the circumstances, participation in NJPAP may provide an alternative to disciplinary action and help professionals maintain their licenses while addressing the underlying concerns. For professionals whose licenses have been suspended or revoked, successful participation may also play an important role in seeking reinstatement.

What Does the Program Involve?

Participation in NJPAP may involve comprehensive evaluations, individualized treatment plans, monitoring agreements, and ongoing compliance requirements. It does not, however, automatically guarantee continued licensure or license reinstatement. Additional requirements may be imposed by the applicable licensing board.
